For my internship with The Times Beacon Record I had to photograph a local Memorial Day Parade.
I took several dozen pictures while I was there and the newspaper editor selected three of them to appear on the cover of the next issue of The Times of Middle Country.

As the first Multimedia Intern for Times Beacon Record Newspapers, a local community newspaper that distributes papers I’ve been making short video packages highlighting events in the community. This weekend, I went to Stony Brook University’s campus and filmed their Earthstock Festivities. The video was featured on the paper’s homepage.
I’ll be working with TBR through the summer to create more videos, help develop their webpage, and learn more about the newsroom.
I attended the JEA/NSPA High School Journalism Convention in Washington D.C. While there, I participated in a write-off competition where I and a partner had to create a 90 second news package about Diversity in under four hours. The video won a Superior award, which was the highest award given and was only won by one other team in the category and 15% of all write-off entrants.
From July 26th-August 5th, I participated in the Robert W. Greene High School Journalism Institute at Stony Brook University. I was selected to participate in the inaugural class with just seventeen other Long Island high school seniors and juniors. As the website says: The free workshop will introduce 18 students to basic skills in news reporting, writing, editing and using video. Students will live at the university and work in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom under the instruction of professional journalists.
We received training across multiple platforms but our introduction to video was limited. While there, myself and one of my peers, Tyler Bittner, wanted to create a news package on our own initiative. We began work on the video at around 8pm that night with Tyler writing and reporting and me filming. I stayed up till around 2 in the morning editing and the video was shown at the culminating reception.
‘Teach Your Children Well’ was the third article I wrote for the Boating Times Long Island magazine. The article appeared in the April issue and was about generational boating and instilling a love for boating within the family. I did all the research and interviews for the article. I also chose the picture that was used to accompany the article by asking my friend David if I could use the picture of him, his dad, and his grandpa. The published version of the article can be read by clicking on the image to the right.
However, don’t start the process of fostering a love of boating by handing your six-year olds the keys to the Boston Whaler. Safety is indispensable and, as Kathy Coward stresses, “just because boating is a recreational activity, there are still consequences that come along with operating a boat. They must be responsible and know when fooling around is not acceptable so no one gets hurt.”
