Today, New York got over a foot of snow. I wasn’t up for traveling too far out of the house but I did break out my videocamera. I took a few shots from the porch and in the dining room and edited it together to a Sufjan Stevens song.

Filmed and edited on February 10th 2010.

I attended the JEA/NSPA High School Journalism Convention in Washington D.C. While there, I participated in a write-off competition where I and a partner had to create a 90 second news package about Diversity in under four hours. The video won a Superior award, which was the highest award given and was only won by one other team in the category and 15% of all write-off entrants.

While there, my friend Jordan and I also created this video that was screened during the opening ceremonies.

Elevator Time Lapse Video

A blog post from the NSPA website

My friend Jordan Michnoff and I created this video on our own initiative at the JEA/NSPA Journalism Convention. We spent about a half hour in the hotel’s glass elevator and created a time lapse video. I overlaid this during editing with sound bytes of people that stepped into the elevator talking about the convention. On a whim, I went down to the convention desk and showed the video to Marc Wood, the communications director of the NSPA. He liked the video so much that they showed it at the closing ceremony and posted it on their website.

From July 26th-August 5th, I participated in the Robert W. Greene High School Journalism Institute at Stony Brook University. I was selected to participate in the inaugural class with just seventeen other Long Island high school seniors and juniors. As the website says: The free workshop will introduce 18 students to basic skills in news reporting, writing, editing and using video. Students will live at the university and work in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom under the instruction of professional journalists.
We received training across multiple platforms but our introduction to video was limited. While there, myself and one of my peers, Tyler Bittner, wanted to create a news package on our own initiative. We began work on the video at around 8pm that night with Tyler writing and reporting and me filming. I stayed up till around 2 in the morning editing and the video was shown at the culminating reception.

A video that I shot and edited for the band O.A.R.’s video contest. The goal was to feature clips of my town set to their single “This Town.” Out of all the entries, my video came in second place.
